How much is a steel matting fence per meter?
In 2×2 inch black iron, a 4×8 ft sheet (4 ft high, 2.44 m long) works out to about ₱130 per meter in 2.6 mm wire, ₱184 in 3.0 mm and ₱219 in 3.5 mm. A 6×20 ft sheet (6 ft high, 6 m long) is about ₱187 per meter in 2.6 mm. Galvanizing for outdoor use adds about 20 to 35%. To find how many sheets you need, divide your fence length by 2.44 (4×8) or 6 (6×20), add 5%, and round up.
Steel matting is better known as concrete reinforcement, but its welded grid also makes a rigid panel fence. It is used for security fencing, perimeter enclosures, animal pens and machine guards. This guide covers which size and gauge to pick, what a fence costs per meter, and how to count the sheets.
Sheet Sizes for Fencing
| Sheet | Size | Fence height | Length per sheet |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4×8 ft | 1.22 m × 2.44 m | 4 ft (1.22 m) | 2.44 m |
| 6×20 ft | 1.83 m × 6 m | 6 ft (1.83 m) | 6 m |

Which Mesh and Gauge for a Fence?
- Mesh opening: 2×2 inch is the usual choice for fences, security screens and cages. Wider openings (4×4 and 6×6 inch) cost less but leave larger gaps.
- Wire gauge: 2.6 mm is used for garden fencing and animal enclosures. 2.8 mm suits perimeter fencing, and 3.0 mm (#8) is a step stronger. Go heavier, 3.5 mm and up, where you want a stiffer, harder-to-cut panel. See the wire mesh gauge guide.
- Finish: Plain black iron rusts outdoors unless it is painted. Hot-dip galvanized matting costs about 20 to 35% more and lasts about 10 to 20 years in the Philippine climate. See galvanized vs black iron.
Steel Matting Fence Price per Meter
Price per meter is the sheet price divided by the sheet length. These use our 2×2 inch black iron prices for October 2026 (pick-up, before freight). The galvanized column adds 20 to 35%.
| Sheet | Wire | Price per sheet | Per meter, black iron | Per meter, galvanized |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4×8 ft (4 ft high) | 2.6 mm | ₱318 | ₱130 | ₱156–₱176 |
| 4×8 ft (4 ft high) | 3.0 mm (#8) | ₱450 | ₱184 | ₱221–₱249 |
| 4×8 ft (4 ft high) | 3.5 mm | ₱534 | ₱219 | ₱263–₱295 |
| 6×20 ft (6 ft high) | 2.6 mm | ₱1,122 | ₱187 | ₱224–₱252 |
| 6×20 ft (6 ft high) | 3.5 mm | ₱1,871 | ₱312 | ₱374–₱421 |

How Many Sheets Do You Need?
- Measure the fence length. Add up the sides of your lot and subtract gates. Our perimeter guide shows how.
- Add 5% for cuts and overlaps at corners.
- Divide by the sheet length: 2.44 m for 4×8 sheets, 6 m for 6×20 sheets.
- Round up to whole sheets.
Example: 96 m of fence
For a 20 m × 30 m lot with a 4 m gate, the fence is 96 m. With a 5% allowance that is 100.8 m.
| Sheet | Calculation | Sheets | Material cost, black iron |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4×8 ft, 2.6 mm | 100.8 ÷ 2.44 | 42 | ₱13,356 |
| 4×8 ft, 3.0 mm | 100.8 ÷ 2.44 | 42 | ₱18,900 |
| 6×20 ft, 2.6 mm | 100.8 ÷ 6 | 17 | ₱19,074 |
Posts, paint or galvanizing, tie wire or fixings, labor and delivery are extra. Add them to your budget.

Installing a Steel Matting Fence
- Posts: Set a post at each panel joint, so every 2.44 m for 4×8 sheets. 6 m sheets need at least one more post in between to keep them straight. Check the spacing with your installer.
- Fixing: Panels are rigid, so they are tied or clipped to the posts or to a frame, not stretched like cyclone wire.
- Ground: Rigid panels suit flat or stepped ground. For a long sloping run, cyclone wire is easier to follow the ground.
- Protect the cut edges: Paint or galvanize any cut ends of black iron matting.
Steel Matting Fence vs Cyclone Wire
A light-gauge steel matting fence can cost less per meter than cyclone wire (₱210 per meter at 4 ft), but black iron needs a finish and galvanized matting costs about the same. Steel matting is rigid and harder to cut. Read the full steel matting vs cyclone wire comparison.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size steel matting is used for fencing?
Most fences use 2×2 inch mesh in 4×8 ft sheets (4 ft high) or 6×20 ft sheets (6 ft high). Custom heights are available on request.
How much is steel matting per meter for a fence?
About ₱130 to ₱219 per meter for 4×8 ft sheets in 2.6 to 3.5 mm black iron, and about ₱187 per meter for a 6×20 ft sheet in 2.6 mm (October 2026). Galvanizing adds about 20 to 35%.
Should I use black iron or galvanized steel matting for a fence?
Use galvanized for outdoor fences, or paint black iron well. Plain black iron is made for use inside concrete.
