One of the most common questions we get at Una Wire Products is: "What's the difference between galvanized and black iron matting — and which one do I need?" The short answer depends on where the matting will be used and how long it needs to last. This article explains both materials clearly so you can order with confidence.
What is Black Iron Steel Matting?
Black iron matting — also called plain steel or mild steel matting — is wire mesh made from low-carbon steel without any protective coating. It has a dark grey or black appearance (hence the name) and is the most economical type of steel matting available.
Because it has no corrosion-resistant coating, black iron matting will rust when exposed to moisture over time. This makes it best suited for indoor applications, embedded concrete work, or any situation where it won't be exposed to rain, humidity, or wet conditions.
What is Galvanized Steel Matting?
Galvanized matting is made from the same base steel wire, but each wire is coated with a layer of zinc — a process called galvanizing. The zinc acts as a sacrificial coating: even if the surface is scratched, the zinc continues to protect the underlying steel from rust.
Galvanizing is done in two ways: hot-dip galvanizing (the wire is dipped into molten zinc, producing a thicker, more durable coat) and electro-galvanizing (a thinner, smoother coat applied electrically). Hot-dip is stronger and preferred for outdoor structural use.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | Black Iron | Galvanized |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Uncoated mild steel | Zinc-coated mild steel |
| Corrosion resistance | Low — rusts without protection | High — zinc coating resists rust |
| Outdoor use | Not recommended | Yes — suitable for outdoor use |
| Cost | Lower | Higher (zinc coating adds cost) |
| Appearance | Dark grey / black | Shiny silver-grey |
| Lifespan (outdoor) | Rusts within months | Many years depending on environment |
| Best for | Indoor, embedded in concrete | Outdoor, wet, coastal environments |

Most residential concrete slab reinforcement in the Philippines uses black iron matting — it's embedded in the concrete pour, which means it's protected from direct moisture exposure.
When to Choose Galvanized Matting
Galvanized is the right choice when:
- The matting will be exposed to rain, humidity, or standing water
- It will be used in coastal or high-humidity environments
- It is visible and appearance matters long-term
- The project requires a longer service life without repainting or maintenance
Common galvanized applications include outdoor perimeter fencing, drainage channel covers, rooftop structures, and agricultural enclosures.
What About Stainless Steel?
For applications that demand the highest level of corrosion resistance — food processing facilities, pharmaceutical plants, marine structures — neither black iron nor galvanized is the right answer. Stainless steel matting is the appropriate choice. See our article on stainless steel matting in the Philippines for more detail.
