Galvanized Barbed Wire in the Philippines: Fencing Guide and Specs

By Una Wire Products Inc.·May 2026·4 min read

Galvanized barbed wire is a cost-effective security fencing material widely used across the Philippines for farm perimeters, industrial facilities, and as a deterrent topping on cyclone wire fences. This guide covers the specifications, installation practices, and applications for barbed wire in the Philippine context.

What is Galvanized Barbed Wire?

Barbed wire consists of two twisted strands of galvanized iron wire with sharp two-point or four-point barbs twisted in at regular intervals. The galvanized zinc coating protects against rust, giving it a service life of many years in outdoor environments — including the humid, coastal conditions common throughout the Philippines.

One standard 140-meter roll covers approximately 140 linear meters per strand. A typical 3-strand fence configuration covering a perimeter would require roughly one roll per 46 linear meters of fence.

Common Uses of Barbed Wire in the Philippines

Farm and Agricultural Perimeters

The most traditional use. Barbed wire strung between wooden or concrete posts defines farm boundaries and keeps livestock from wandering. Three to five strands at graduated heights provide effective containment for cattle, carabao, and goats.

Security Topping on Fences

Barbed wire is commonly added to the top of cyclone wire, concrete, or hollow block walls as a security deterrent. Two to three strands angled outward at 45° on arm brackets significantly increases the difficulty of climbing over a fence.

Industrial Perimeter Security

Warehouses, manufacturing plants, and storage yards in the Philippines frequently use multiple strands of barbed wire along the top of their perimeter fence as a cost-effective security upgrade.

Temporary Construction Site Boundaries

Barbed wire can be quickly deployed along temporary fence posts to create a secure construction site boundary, deterring theft of materials and equipment.

Installation Guidelines

Post spacing of 3–4 meters is standard for agricultural barbed wire fencing. Corner and strainer posts must be set deeper and braced to handle the tension of the wire. A minimum of three strands is recommended for livestock containment; five or more strands are used for perimeter security. Always use proper gloves and protective clothing when handling and installing barbed wire.

Safety Note

Barbed wire is a physical hazard and must be installed responsibly. In residential areas, ensure that barbed wire is placed at a height and angle that prevents injury to passers-by. Local government regulations may apply to barbed wire installation in certain zones — check with your local government unit (LGU) if in doubt.
